Detailed Itinerary:
Day 1 (Saturday): Regensburg (Embarkation)
Regensburg is a city (population 131,000 in 2007) in Bavaria, Germany, located at the confluence of the Danube and Regen rivers, at the northernmost bend in the Danube. To the east lies the Bavarian Forest. Regensburg is the capital of the Bavarian administrative region Upper Palatinate. The large medieval center of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Regensburg began to flourish in medieval times and the old town, stretching along the banks of the Danube, is evidence of this period. The area around the cathedral features some fine architecture. Built in the 13th century, the cathedral is probably the most important Gothic structure in Bavaria.
Day 2 (Sunday): Passau
Passau sits on a narrow point of land where the Inn, Danube and IIz Rivers meet. Enjoy a walk through the city and perhaps a visit to the cathedral. The cathedral is an impressive Baroque building, complete with dome and flanking towers. Beneath the octagonal dome is the largest church organ in the world. Built between 1924 and 1928 and extended from 1979 to 1980, it claims no fewer than 17,388 pipes and 231 stops.
Day 3 (Monday): Melk - Krems
This morning, visit the 900-year-old abbey at Melk, a Benedictine monastery that was originally one of Leopold II’s castles. See its spectacular wall and ceiling frescoes, note the library’s comprehensive collection of medieval manuscripts, and admire the graceful spiral staircase. After lunch aboard, we stop at the picturesque Wachau Valley town of Dürnstein, where you can explore on your own, sample some local vintages from this famous wine-producing region, or join an optional walking tour of the town’s highlights. Krems is an independent city (Statutarstadt) in the Austrian state weep. Krems is the center of Wachau wines. Krems has a long history, over 1000 years old town is listed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO. It is also a lively city with many restaurants and other entertainment
Day 4 and Day 5 (Tuesday & Wednesday): Vienna
Vienna is a unique blend of the historic and the modern with a wealth of architecture and artistic and musical heritage. Many of the world's most important composers, including Beethoven and Mozart, have lived and performed behind Vienna's Baroque façades. In addition to this Baroque splendor, there are excellent examples of Art Nouveau architecture .
The heart of Vienna is the Innerestadt where some of Vienna's most popular tourist attractions can be found, along with pedestrianized streets lined with countless shops, cafés, bars and restaurants. The center point is the Graben (literally 'moat'), which is a wide square lined with shops and pavement cafés under large umbrellas. Following the demolition of the city walls in 1857, the Ringstrasse was laid out and some of Vienna's most beautiful buildings were built along it, between 1858 and 1865. Among the most important are the Staatsoper (State Opera House), Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Arts), Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum), Parlament (Parliament), Rathaus (City Hall) and Burgtheater.
Day 6 (Thursday): Bratislava
Arrive in Bratislava this morning and embark on a walking tour of Slovakia’s charming capital—the only national capital that borders two other countries, Austria and Hungary—with a long and fascinating history. See attractions like the medieval Town Hall complex and fortifications at Michael’s Tower, baroque Jesuit Church and Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral, and pass by several Habsburg-era baroque palaces before returning to your ship for lunch and departure. Enjoy relaxing Danube cruising; sail into Budapest late this evening.
Day 7 (Friday): Budapest
The importance of BUDAPEST to Hungary is difficult to overestimate. Over two million people - roughly one-fifth of the population - live in the city, and everything converges here: wealth, political power, cultural life and transport. Surveying the city from Castle Hill, it's obvious why Budapest was dubbed the "Pearl of the Danube". Its grand buildings and sweeping bridges look magnificent, especially when floodlit or illuminated by the barrage of fireworks launched from Gellért Hill on Constitution Day. The inner city and the nineteenth-century boulevards are now under siege from Western fashions and advertising, but they retain a distinctively Hungarian character, which for visitors is highlighted by the sounds and appearance of the distinctive Magyar language.
Day 8 (Saturday): Budapest (Disembarkation)
After breakfast, disembark and proceed to the airport for your return flight.
Or explore the Hungarian capital.
