Breakfast on board during the cruise. Arrival in Oltenita around 10:00am. Departure for the optional excursion to Bucharest. A day devoted to the guided tour of the Romanian capital. The cultural and economic centre of the entire country was founded five hundred years ago. In the 1930s, Bucharest was nicknamed “Little Paris” because of its long boulevards lined with trees. There is even a Triumphal Arch on the impressive Kisseleff Boulevard. You will probably be surprised to discover the mixture of architectural styles in Bucharest. Among others, Curtea Veche, the ruins of the palace from the 15th century, built by Vlad the Impaler, who founded the city, the orthodox churches, the manors in the style of the Second Empire, the clumsy Stalinist architecture of the communist period and the Parliament Building, an enormous construction with six thousand rooms. Lunch in a restaurant in Bucharest. We will rejoin the boat in Giurgiu around 5:00pm. Departure of the cruise for Rousse, which we will reach in the evening. Rousse is one of the biggest ports in Bulgaria. Back on board, dinner, followed by an evening of dancing. Overnight stopover.
Day 4: Rousse
Breakfast on board. In the morning, optional tour of Rousse. The city is surprising in its multi-ethnic nature. It is a careful mix of the Bulgarian and Romanian cultures. It is impressive because of its broad avenues, its large squares and its wonderful buildings which pay homage to the architecture of the so-called national Renaissance. Back on board at the end of the morning and departure of the cruise. Afternoon's sailing. We will be passing through two countries, Romania on the left bank and Bulgaria on the right bank. Dinner on board, followed by an evening's entertainment. Sailing at night.
Day 5: Passing through the famous Iron Gate
Day's sailing on the Danube. We will be sailing through Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia. Lunch on board. In the afternoon, we will pass through the famous Iron Gate, the Danube gorge between the Carpathians and the Balkans, a fantastic place. The most spectacular section of this gorge has been referred to by sailors as “the Cauldron” because the water, caught between two towering walls, seems to boil. A brighter landmark, on the Serbian bank, is the “Tabula Traiana”, an immense marble plaque commemorating the “imperial route” which linked Rome with the province of Dacia. We are now in the Little Cauldron. Lunch on board. The rock faces come closer together and then, suddenly, the gorge opens up, giving the impression of a lake surrounded by mountains, at the point where the Mracona valley empties into the Danube. An elegant viaduct towers above the mouth of the river and we can see the “portrait” of Decebal carved into the rock face. Dinner on board and continuation of the cruise to Belgrade.
Day 6: Belgrade, Serbia – Novi Sad
Through customs in V. Gradiste. Breakfast on board during the cruise. Arrival in Belgrade around 8h. Morning devoted to the optional tour of the Serb capital. Belgrad in Serbian means white castle or white city. At the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, close to the Morava corridor which links the countries on the Danube to the Aegean Sea. The city is the combination of a fortress on a promontory, a city of trade and a port. Back to the boat for lunch. Departure of the cruise for Novi Sad, situated in the southern part of the Great Plain in the region of Baga, which we will reach around 18h. Optional tour of Novi Sad with a look at Petrovaradin castle. Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina. Once christened "the Athens of Serbia" for its cultural influence during the Turkish occupation. Sailing at night.
Day 8: Budapest, Hungary
